THERE WOULD BE NO BREAKING BAD WITHOUT THE SOPRANOS
160Vince Gilligan has often stated that the path blazed by The Sopranos was decisive for him in television history. He believes that without Tony Soprano, there would be no Walter White. In creating the character of Walter White and constructing Breaking Bad, Gilligan drew considerable inspiration from the antihero archetype presented by The Sopranos. The Sopranos demonstrated the courage to center characters—flawed, dark, yet human—something television had long been unaccustomed to. Gilligan embraced this legacy and constructed Walter White's rise and fall, drawing inspiration from this tradition.
However, Gilligan also drew a line between The Sopranos' finale and his own series' finale. He believes that The Sopranos' open-ended, ambiguous, and open-to-interpretation denouement is exceptionally bold and creative. However, with Breaking Bad, he wanted to leave the audience with a more definitive, more complete ending. That's why he chose to structure Breaking Bad's finale as a clear-cut reckoning, unlike the famous ending where Tony Soprano disappears into the dark.
Gilligan also emphasized the impact of The Sopranos on television. He believes the series expanded the boundaries of television storytelling, paving the way for character-driven stories that explore the darker side of human nature. The existence of series like Breaking Bad was made possible thanks to this opening by The Sopranos.
