Rage is a first-person shooter video game developed by id Software and published by Bethesda Softworks, released in October 2011 for Microsoft Windows, the PlayStation 3, and the Xbox 360. It was first shown as a tech demo at the 2007 Apple Worldwide Developers Conference and was announced at the QuakeCon. Rage uses id Software's id Tech 5 game engine and is the final game released by the company under the supervision of founder John Carmack.

I thought I would do a series for a game that I have always felt is either underrated or forgotten about. Although there are many flaws with the game and it will always seem like a missed opportunity in many ways, I have always had fun whenever I have decided to play Rage, and I feel like it is worth taking another look at after not playing it for a few years.

Most importantly the gameplay still hold up and is very enjoyable, with wide variety of weapons to use in the post apocalypse, all with fantastic sound design. The weapon handling is also fantastic that gives a real weight to combat and makes it feel very visceral to play. But the stand out feature of the combat is the animation system that makes it feel like enemies are really reacting to being hit during combat. All this combined makes the combat gameplay really satisfying. Combined with the other tools and gadgets available to you as the player there is a lot of freedom to how you approach combat and can still offer a dynamic challenge (mainly on higher difficulties)
Other aspects of gameplay like the car combat although not to everyone's taste is also very enjoyable and I feel is much better than that of the sequel Rage 2.

Another stand out feature is the art direction and I feel like Rage offers one of the most visually striking and most well realized post apocalyptic worlds. Where the ruins of the old worlds are really well integrated with the landscape, whereas newer settlements stick out each with there own unique style. It makes the world feel handcrafted from the ground up rather than just an open map that locations/settlements have be put on, which is something I feel Rage 2 was very guilty of.

The majority of the characters you meet are also well realized, with great voice acting and character animations that help make them feel like real people that have lived in the world for a long time. They also have a lot of attention to detail in there animations each having unique gestures like the robot on Kvasir's shoulder. Rather ironically then members of the resistance that are the main vehicles for the plot from about halfway through the game are the most plain and least well animated characters which doesn't help the story.

Speaking of which the story is fairly typical and I feel that with the world feeling so believable they could have done a lot more with the story and integrated the main antagonistic faction much better. Or offered up some sort of twist to make the story a bit more interesting. There was also a lot more room for world building in terms of lore, similarly to what they did with the 2016 Doom reboot that did a fantastic job of integrating its world and lore to the story. The story also ends very abruptly with quite a anticlimactic ending that obviously hints at a direct sequel we never got until the Rage 2 reboot. This probably left quite a sour taste in people moths that did complete the game.

Although visually brilliant the open world feels quite lifeless and other than some scripted events involving car combat with bandits nothing much of interest happens in the open world, and other dangers you hear NPC's mention like mutants are never experienced while in the open world as random encounters. There is also no real incentive to to explore the open world on foot rather than just driving through it from one location to another.

I have always wondered how Rage would be remembered if it just made a few changes and improvements to help relieve some of its shortcomings.

There can be some issues with playing the game on newer system but there are many fixes available, the steam community page being a good place to start looking.

Although not doing absolutely everything in the game we will be doing everything needed for the obsessive compulsive achievement ('100% Completion')

I look forward to replaying one of my favorite games when it came out and hoe you all enjoy the series with me.

Thanks for watching like and subscribe for more
