This Free Play Arcade At Utah Retro Have Expo Has So Many Classics!
I've been blessed to be invited to the Utah Retro Game Expo for the last 3 years. It is run by fantastic people and has just an amazing atmosphere. One of the things that they do each year is they actually have a free play area with both arcade and consoles, and we decided to give this year's room a check before The doors open to the public on Friday. I was super geek to see some of these arcade cabinets that I have not seen in years, one which my brother Scott and I used to play together when we were kids.
The Arcade version of Track and Field by Konami is super fun, and the unique thing is it doesn't have an arcade joystick. instead to play the game you simply hit different buttons to go faster or to throw the javelin. My brother Scott and I used to play this all the time at our local arcade, Sammy's burger place, in Menomonee falls Wisconsin when we were kids.
I know that Popeye has a special place in the heart of our friend Jay from @SquarePegs and I have to admit the arcade game is pretty fantastic. You can see the influence that Donkey Kong had on this game as it definitely seems to play a lot like it yet unique enough with the Popeye characters. I love the music, I love the graphics, it is a great game.
A number of years ago, I was able to find a Donkey Kong Jr, Super Mario Bros, and Mario Brothers arcade cabinets at the art of animation resort in Disney World, and they actually had one here again. But in addition to that, they had an older Super Mario Bros cabinet that had a super faded marquee. I actually love this because it shows the age of the cabinet and the fact that it was actually used versus something that was just in storage or in someone's barcade. these are all great cabinets and I absolutely love them.
In addition to All of the amazing arcade cabinets, they also had a free play area for retro consoles as well. NES, Super NES, GameCube, and 64, many other systems were all represented. I love to see something like this where gamers of all ages have the opportunity to interact with older hardware that they may have missed out on.
Which one of these systems or Arcade cabinets would you play first? Have you played any of these original arcade systems? share your thoughts down in the comments.
