I just watched Akkad Daily’s breakdown of the horrific murder of Iryna Zarutska, a 23-year-old Ukrainian refugee violently killed by Decarlos Brown Jr., a homeless man with a history of 14 arrests and clear mental health issues. What shocks me most isn’t just the brutality—but watching our media and political figures retreat into silence or worse, exploit this tragedy. In this reaction, I stand unapologetically with Iryna, condemn Brown’s violent history and release, and challenge the mayor's comforting statements as thin cover for political maneuvering. We need transparency, public safety, and unapologetic remembrance—not platitudes.

On August 22, 2025, Iryna Zarutska, 23, a Ukrainian refugee who fled war, was fatally stabbed on the Lynx Blue Line light rail in Charlotte by Decarlos Brown Jr., a homeless repeat offender with at least 14 prior arrests and diagnosed schizophrenia. She was stabbed in the neck and died at the scene.

Brown had recently been released with no bond after bizarre 911 misuse behavior and never underwent an ordered mental evaluation—in spite of prior violent incidents and mental health red flags.

Despite the brutality caught on surveillance video, media coverage and Democratic leaders have largely remained silent, many avoiding sharing the footage. Mayor Vi Lyles praised media restraint "out of respect," drawing intense criticism for political posturing rather than prioritizing safety and justice.

Policy responses have included increased transit security, a higher budget for safety personnel, and heightened public discussion about justice system failures.
