Threads of Fate (PS1) Gameplay -No Commentary- | Played on a PS3 | Underrated Gem |
Threads of Fate/Dew Prism was a spiritual successor of sorts to Brave Fencer Musashi, and is a game that seems to divide fans. Some loved it, some hated it, and some fell in the middle. Even for the time it got mixed reviews.
I have personally always really liked this game, but I can understand why some did not. In Threads, you can either play through the game as Rue or Mint. Rue is the ax-wielding shape shifter who's on a quest to find an ancient relic to help a friend. Mint is a bratty, deposed princess who's after the relic to defeat her younger sister who deposed her, and take over the world. Rue is the fighter type, Mint is the magician.
Honestly, I love this game, I think it has a ton of charm, but there are some frustrating platforming scenes in the game, and I was really struggling with the difficulty until I realized that I could sell the souls of my vanquished enemies and buy a better weapon and better armor. That one was my fault entirely, not the game's fault.
Also, the RPG elements aren't obvious. If there is an experience system, it's not made known. Your character does gain life and MP by defeating enemies, but it doesn't have a traditional leveling up system which might be off-putting to more traditional RPG fans.
Graphically, by PS1 standards, the game looks great. I remember seeing a preview of this game in an old magazine where they said this game looked like Dreamcast graphics on the PS1, and while they aren't DC quality, for a fully polygonal PS1 game, the game looks really good compared to it's PS1 contemporaries.
I will always really enjoy Threads of Fate. I can understand the complaints against the game, but I consider this game to, easily, be Squaresoft's most underrated PS1 title. It's gameplay is solid, it's characters are charming, and the music is excellent and helps create set the mood well. The game is kind of short but compels you to play it through twice to get both Rue and Mint's sides of the story. Overall, I've always been a big fan of this game, and while it's not perfect, and it did frustrate me at time while playing this footage, it's charming setting and characters, solid gameplay mechanics, and lighthearted feel make for a game that I think gets unfairly hated. This game doesn't get the love it deserves. This is a completely underrated game in my book.
