Time Loops in Video Games

Video Games centered around the idea of a Time Loop- usually in the form of a roguelike or rougelite- have become a dime a dozen recently, and tons of people would probably agree that these games are part of the newest genre wave that we see industry-wide every couple of years. With them being so prevalent (and perhaps being in danger of oversaturation due to just how many of these games now exist) it feels like the best time to dive into the efficacy of time loop premises on gameplay, story, and overall structure of a video game. Not only why and when they work, but when they don't, and what path they can take to avoid fading into the background as people grow tired of the time loop formula.
