On this day, a bold uprising by resistance fighters in World War II was brutally crushed due to the inaction of their supposed allies. On October 2, 1944, the Warsaw Uprising came to a tragic end after 63 days of fighting. When the Soviet Army reached the suburbs of Warsaw in early August, over 30,000 Polish resistance fighters launched a massive uprising against the Germans occupying the city, anticipating that the Red Army would soon move in to support them. Unfortunately, that support never came, likely because the Soviets also wished to control Poland following the war and having Warsaw in the hands of the old Polish government would prove problematic. Despite the incredible bravery of the fighters, the Germans ultimately crushed the resistance, deported almost every citizen of Warsaw, and razed the city to the ground.
