On this day, a nation’s celebration of its holiest day was interrupted by a surprise attack from its enemies. On October 6, 1973, Syria and Egypt launched a surprise attack on Israel on the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur, sparking the Yom Kippur War. The Arabs initially made good progress against the unprepared Israeli forces, but Israel managed to regroup after three days and swiftly pushed them back, forcing the Syrians back to their borders and encircling the Egyptian 3rd Army in the Sinai. The conflict also caused tensions to flare up between the United States, which supported Israel, and the Soviet Union, which supported the Arab League. Eager to avoid conflict with the Soviets, the US helped to broker a ceasefire after less than three weeks of fighting, and the end of the war paved the way for the landmark Camp David Peace Accords between Egypt and Israel.
