On this day, the power of misinformation turned a battlefield stalemate into a disastrous loss. On October 3, 42 BC, Mark Antony and Octavian sought revenge against Julius Caesar’s assassins Brutus and Cassius at the Battle of Philippi. The chaotic engagement was fought in two parts, with Octavian fighting Brutus’ army while Mark Antony faced Cassius. Brutus actually managed to push back Octavian’s army, but Mark Antony routed Cassius. The battle looked very much like it would be a bloody stalemate, but the key moment came when Cassius received false information that Brutus had also been defeated. Cassius hastily chose to end his own life before verifying this info, and Brutus proved unable to manage the army on his own. Octavian and Mark Antony defeated Brutus three weeks later, and finally avenged Caesar.
