On this day, one of history’s greatest conquerors struck a fatal blow to the largest empire standing in his way. On October 1st, 331 BC, Alexander the Great won his signature victory against a much larger Persian army at the Battle of Gaugamela. Persian Emperor Darius III knew he had a significantly larger force than Alexander’s invading army, and chose the flat plain of Gaugamela in modern-day Northern Iraq to maximize his numbers advantage. Alexander countered by employing a very risky strategy in which he baited the Persian cavalry to his far right flank and then attacked the weakened center with perfect timing. Alexander’s Macedonians destroyed most of the Persian army as Darius fled in panic. The weakened Persian emperor was murdered by his subordinates shortly thereafter, and Alexander quickly added Persia to his own growing empire.
