On this day, a seemingly unstoppable horde finally met its match and could conquer no more. Today in 1260, an army led by the Mamluk Sultan Saif ad-Din Qutuz decisively defeated a Mongol horde at the battle of Ayn Jalut. Following the Mongols’ conquest of Persia and their sacks of Baghdad and Damascus, Mamluk Egypt was the only thing standing between the Mongols and complete dominance of the Islamic world when the two armies met at Ayn Jalut in Southeastern Galilee. Thanks to a very clever feigned retreat that drew the bulk of the Mongol forces into an ambush, the Mamluks won the day. The Mongols retreated in total disarray and never successfully advanced into the Middle East again after Ayn Jalut, and the battle is considered to represent the high-water mark of the Mongol Empire’s legendary conquests.
