On this day, two armies slugged it out in a very ugly battle that would go on to inspire some very beautiful music. Today in 1812, Napoleon’s invasion of Russia saw its bloodiest day at the Battle of Borodino. Russian Field Marshal Mikhail Kutuzov committed his entire army to the battle, which represented the last chance for the Russians to prevent Napoleon from taking Moscow, and the result was a titanic pitched battle that saw both sides suffer horrific losses. In the end, the French won the battle and took Moscow, but their army was seriously weakened and Napoleon would be forced into a disastrous retreat from Russia. In 1880, Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky would commemorate the Battle of Borodino with his legendary 1812 Overture, and Tchaikovsky’s masterpiece for orchestra and cannons is what the Battle of Borodino is best known for today!
