On this day, a long-lived queen exceeded her own ancestor’s record for time spent on the throne. Today in 2015, Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom surpassed her great-great grandmother Queen Victoria as the longest-reigning female monarch in the history of the world. Elizabeth’s reign began in 1952 with the death of her father, King George VI, and she presided over a period of great change as the British Empire rapidly decolonized and transformed into the Commonwealth of Nations. Despite a litany of scandals and tragedy surrounding the royal family during her time as queen, Elizabeth herself remained a stable and generally well-liked head of state before her reign finally ended yesterday after 70 years and 214 days. May she rest in peace!
