On this day, 44 pioneers laid down the foundation of one of America’s most important cities. Today in 1781 a group of settlers working on the orders of King Charles III of Spain founded El Pueblo de la Reina de los Angeles. Known to history as Los Pobladores, the settlers of the new village were notable in that they were drawn from a wide variety of the social and racial castes that made up the Spanish Empire at the time. However, despite this diversity, the settlers of the new village had no qualms about exploiting the local Tongva Indians, who were used as slave labor to actually construct most of the buildings in the town. In 1848, the city officially passed into American hands following the Mexican-American War, and since then, for better or worse, the city of Los Angeles has grown into one of the USA’s most economically and culturally influential cities.
