Todd Furmanski is a researcher with a focus in interactive digital environments and procedural content generation. Todd has a PhD in Media Arts and Practice, as well as an MFA in Interactive Media, both from the University of Southern California School of Cinematic Arts. His focuses include emergent algorithms as applied to interactivity, as well as the developing history of games and virtual spaces.
In this talk Todd shows a series of roguelikes he has developed that combine realtime 3D graphics with a turn-based "Myst"-like point and click interface. This allows him to have a very in-depth world simulation without really having to worry about framerate. The games are much more versatile than the old Myst-like games, as instead of being a database of images, they draw upon a dynamic 3D space. Day/night cycles, large numbers of agents, weather, and world scale all become possibilities, while being much more manageable than a real-time experience. The projects do give a number of challenges to structuring User Interfaces, but also provide a lot of potential for users to learn from a fairly intuitive "click where you want on the image to go/interact." Having tried to teach grandmothers how to use game controllers, or break out spreadsheets for in-depth turn-based roguelikes, he hopes to get a different mix of graphical aesthetics and "pick up and play" mentality.
