Junko the Terror is an Ultra Festival with her first non-playable appearance in the Finale of Hifuu Bm3. Thanks to her unorthodox playstyle revolving around anomaly breaks, she is considered to be one of the most broken characters in Touhou LostWord; on par with Otohime, Azusa, and the Praetorian.
Junko has the reputation of being the best barrier breaker in the game. At first glance, she has a plethora of Star bullets in both her Normal and Focus shot, with the former going as far as having 6 layers of Star bullets at 3P which makes her reliable in breaking stray barriers. However, her main selling point doesn’t at all lie in her shots; rather, it’s her absolute flexibility in anomaly breaks that makes her shine.
To break it down, her AoE spell cards are suitable for breaking Poison and Burn anomalies while her Single Target ones are geared toward breaking Freeze, Paralysis and Blind. Her Last Word, on the other hand, can break all five anomalies at 3P, and due to the fact that a single bullet with the breaking attribute can wreck all barriers inflicted with the appropriate anomaly, Junko is not as affected by low ACC as other characters as long as she can land just one single hit with the required stat. Not to mention, anomaly break is not affected by the target’s temperament, thus allowing her to break VOID units (those without elemental weaknesses) assuming they are not immune to anomalies.
On the other hand, compared to the more traditional elemental breaks, Junko requires a bit of preparation, planning and adjustments to make the most out of her theoretical breaking prowess. Using her normal shot at 0P or her focus shot at 3P, she can inflict Poison or Burn while her 1st passive allows Junko to inflict Blind to her current target. Her first and second skills also inflict Poison or Freeze respectively on the targeted enemy while her spell cards can also cause Burn or Paralysis. With a proper setup and sometimes with a bit of allies’ support, she can wreck everything down to ground zero with a single Last Word. That being said, Junko is power hungry owing to the fact that she requires at least 1 Power to actually be able to break one type of anomaly (the ones comes from her skills) while needing 2 to actually break the anomaly caused by her own spells. Her Last Word, on the other hand, requires 3P to unlock the 3 final layers of bullets that contain 3 different anomaly breaks. Usually, this means that she needs an ample source of Power from story cards and is more suited for manual play so that you can set up anomalies for the trainwreck. Having to set up for anomaly breaks also means that she is somewhat slower in breaking compared to elemental breaks; the latter of which can be as simple as boosting enough Power and hit the button.
That being said, she is still a great unit. Having no elements in her spell cards and Last Word means she is not affected by elemental resistance. Combined with the anomaly break prowess, these two factors allow her to join in every Elemental EX battle and Character Challenges where the adversaries are immune to a variety of elements. Not to mention, Junko is the only unit that is immune to every single barrier breaking method as she is perfectly neutral when it comes to elemental affinities and is unaffected by every anomaly. Still, while this means that she can survive a few stray shots with her barriers intact, she is not at all a tank to withstand the enemy's onslaught.
To conclude, Junko the Terror is a Yin-based attacker with an unorthodox playstyle based around anomaly breaks. While this can be a bit tricky to pull off and requires experience in anomaly management, it gives Junko the flexibility along with being one of the few units that can break 7 barriers at once, assuming the target is susceptible to anomalies, of course. Nevertheless, aside from a very few enemies such as the tengus in Star EX, Marisa A6 in Conflux EX Threat and an enemy at green gauge in Remilia EX battle, nothing can stop Junko on her quest of vengeance against the Lunar Capital.
By the way, can LW stop overusing the word EX for like, everything? For the love of gods, plural.
