The 5th of the B3 crews in JP, also the last released alongside with the Enchanter, the Shaman sometimes got the bad rap of being the worst of her peers, a debatable title she shares with the Oracle and the Servant. In spite of her low expectation, the Shaman is undeniably one of (if not) the most steadfast units and, despite being classified as a Technician, she is also the only one with the playstyle of a Defender at the time of her introduction. Not only that, due to the switch of meta from a one-turn clear to a long drawn out battle with the introduction of new challenge stages, the Shaman now has the chance to show her true potential as the protector of the lost and the fallen.
For normal gameplay, although her spell cards are somewhat on the better side, the Shaman is somewhat underwhelmed due to her bullet layouts in her Last Word. First of all, her version of Musou Tensei consists of only Yang Ofuda bullets, thus giving her a hard time choosing the best card to equip. The best in slot for Reimu as of now is a Curious Festival, the card that gives her 25% Ofuda bullet damage boost but with Yin ATK Up (which she can’t make use of) or the 19th Hakurei Shrine Reitaisai, which also gives her the same amount of Ofuda boost but with 1 level of Crit ATK up (which she can make used of if the enemy is in the list of her killer tag), both of which are kind of underwhelming considering the majority of bullet types have at least a 30-35% boost in damage, with some have up to 50%. This fact alone hampers her damage potential by quite a bit, which is only made worse by the fact that her Last Word bullet layout is 1-1-3, requiring Reimu to have 3 Power to be able to dish out a devastating blow, something that is impossible when using only her for a 1 turn set-up. Still, the Shaman’s damage potential is still stronger than the pre-B3 units and on par with the first 3 UFes, which usually is more than enough for event farming.
For challenging contents, on the other hand, due to the fact that she is strong at Wood and Sun, leaning toward the latter, and the fact that most of the Character Battle EXes have Sun as one of the weaknesses, the Shaman now has a role in those fights. While she is still outpaced by her F1 counterpart in terms of damage and anomaly breaks, her unholy resilience from her defensive stat along with her Evasion and Focus UP from her Boost and Graze respectively allows her to soak up, to dodge, or to graze all the incoming blows. Even on her own, her self-heal and her barrier regeneration allows her to tank hits and with proper support, she can definitely hold the line indefinitely to protect her allies while shrugging off every but the most devastating attacks. Not to mention, the long drawn out theatre is her playground owing to the fact that she has ample time and chances to build up her power before finishing her adversaries in an all-out Last Word attack. Finally, despite not having any Burn anomaly, the Shaman can break said anomaly via her 2nd and 4th spell, along with her Last Word at full power, allowing her to exploit these anomalies when the chance comes.
It is important to note that as the Shaman has both Slice and Hard bullets, her choices in story cards open up quite a bit. The Witch of Scarlet Dream is usually a must for Reimu as she requires an ample supply of Power to keep the damage going. Not to mention, said card also gives her a decent stat boost in Yang ATK and Agility, which are important for her 1st and 3rd spell, both of which contain Slice bullets. An alternative for these slots is Undercover Reporter which grants a damage boost in Wood bullets along with better Yang ATK and Agility. On the other hand, Dancing in the Puddle is a good alternative to the Witch of Scarlet Dream thanks to its ample Power boost along with Yang ATK and Yang DEF, which her 2nd and 4th spell can make use of. For her Last Word, a Curious Festival, the 19th Hakurei Shrine Reitaisai, Waiting in Comfort or Sun damage boost cards are recommended.
In general, despite being considered to be underwhelming, thanks to the meta change, the Shaman becomes more useful as of now. While it’s totally true that she is outshone by the newer UFes contestants, making her less appealing to pull, those who have her can now use her at her full potential. Moreover, thanks to her Sun break potential, she, alongside the Hunter and the Gardener, can make an appearance as the core for Sun EX, assuming that stage won’t be designed against her like how Star EX was designed against the Oracle.
By the way, I got 2 Shamans in 4 pulls. And yes, 4 as in, 20 SCs and 6000 coins.
