Now for something really different.

This is a Chinese fan script released a couple weeks back, called 東方崎路行. It's a crossover with Octopath Traveler.

There are two routes/shots: Reimu gets stages 1-4, Marisa gets 5-8, and both routes play through 9-10, for a total of the standard 6 stages.

For Stage 9, you choose a boss to fight out of four, and after the stage you can go back and change your choices of blessings from the previous 4 stages.

The overall gameplay is your normal lives and bombs STG, with several additions:

1. After each boss, they offer you certain blessings to choose from. I've translated the ones that I've encountered here (turn on captions), but ping me in Fangames and Chill Discord with a screenshot if you want translations for the blessings of other bosses.
2. Grazing will fill the circle around you. Once it fills up, it resets and you get 0.50 power. Certain blessings will add extra effects to this.
3. At max power, your partner (the shot you aren't playing) will appear and join your shot.
4. Pressing C at max power will make your partner (the shot you aren't playing) go into "berserk" mode. For Marisa, she moves to the bottom of the screen and gets a wide shot. Certain blessings will modify or add extra effects to berserk mode.
5. Each boss has a last spell (when the HUD disappears). If you die, you'll actually lose a life, but the boss will always drop one life when you capture or fail a last spell. So yes, you can game over on a last spell. The exception to all of this is the final boss, whose full-screen spell is not a Last Spell, it's a regular one that you must shoot down to defeat.

I chose Reimu because her bomb is easy to abuse to recover power via the graze mechanic. I almost cleared but died on the final spell, RIP. Even just one stupid death avoided in the preceding stages and I'd be good, oh well.

As for my opinions of the game itself......
The stages are major :sleeping_accomodations: . Nothing interesting goes on and they drag on for too long. The boss battles are not bad. JRPG epic music does NOT fit into Touhou-style STG's at all and actively hurt my enjoyment of the game.

Though I've never played Octopath, so an Octopath fan might have different opinions.

Overall, this is a high-effort love-letter, but more towards Octopath than Touhou. The Touhou part is just...there.
