The commuter train service from Toulouse to the southern border town of Latour-de-Carol, located in the Pyrénées-Orientales department in the region of Occitanie, covers a distance of 163 km along the Portet-Saint-Simon–Puigcerdà line commencing at Toulouse Matabiau, the central station of the city located at an altitude of 143 m ASL and continuing in a southerly direction toward the Pyrenees mountain range situated between France and Spain, ascending up to heights of 1 562 m ASL en route.

The Portet-Saint-Simon - Puigcerdà railway, completed in 1929, runs till Latour-de Carol-Enveitg (1 256 m ASL) in France and adjacent to the French-Spanish border.
The Latour-de-Carol station is one of the few stations in the world served by three different track gauges: the standard gauge (1 435 mm), the Iberian gauge (1 668 mm) and a meter gauge rail (Cerdagne line) with three different voltage supplies of 1.5 kV, 3 kV and 850 V DC respectively.

Renfe's Rodalies Catalunya commuter rail network connects Latour-de-Carol with Barcelona and an overnight sleeper train service operates to Paris (Austerlitz station). The "Little Yellow Train" serves on the meter gauge Cerdagne Line all the way to Villefranche–Vernet-les-Bains.
