Due to my comparative lack of interest in multiplayer gaming I've never bothered trying out the Tribes series before, but at least I'm old enough to remember the mid-90s when Dynamix's Earthsiege and later Starsiege were all the rage among certain gamers. Seeing as Gamespot handed out some free beta keys to its registered users I decided to check out the new Unreal Engine-powered Tribes: Ascend, and it's an interesting take on the online shooter for sure. The combination of highly precision-based shooting, large-scale environments and unique traversal abilities (jetpacks!) represents a quirky FPS niche worthy of being brought back from the dead, although it's definitely going to be hard for a small studio like Hi-Rez to break into this highly competitive genre armed only with an old IP and a risky F2P business model...
