Turtles/Turpin Longplay (Arcadia 2001 Version)
- Turtles/Turpin Longplay (Arcadia 2001 Version) -
Excited to dive into the world of the forgotten gem, Arcadia 2001, a console close to my gaming heart. Starting off with Turtles/Turpin feels like the perfect tribute – a port from the classic Konami/Stern arcade releases, easily among my top 5 challenging yet addictive old-school games.
Rescue the baby turtles and guide them home – sounds straightforward, right? Not quite. The relentless beetles have other plans, chasing you down at every turn. The Arcadia 2001 version, a tad easier than its arcade or Magnavox Odyssey 2 counterparts, adds intriguing twists but keeps the intense challenge intact.
Here's the deal: the house isn't randomly placed; it's always at the top right. Clear the area, and a passage opens for the next stage. And those bombs? Limited by your energy bar. No energy, no bombs. Surprisingly, this simplifies things, unlike other versions where bomb bonuses appear randomly. You get a more strategic edge with 15 to 20 bombs (I didn't count them) tied to your energy, a savior when dealing with van-like bugs (yes, no kidding, they look more like vans here! lol) trying to thwart your heroics.
It's a game of wits – place bombs wisely, conserve them, but never drop your guard. The beetles are cunning, quick to corner you if you're not strategic or luring them into your traps. Trust me; losing all lives in the first level isn't uncommon!
Not usually a fan of frustrating games, but conquering Turtles/Turpin was a personal challenge. Failed as a kid, but this time, it was a matter of honor. I was determined to see it through. The journey to the next stage was my only safe haven! Couldn't give up; I knew I had it in me.
