Tutorial: How to add PC Sega Rally Revo tracks to Arcade Sega Rally 3 in Teknoparrot
Don't worry, the tutorial isn't 12 minutes long, I chat a bit about the game after I explain how to get this working. I can't take any credit for discovering how to do this - Big ups to Pooterman, who suggested how to do it by swapping the tracks out, and Boomslang, who confirmed it worked, over at the BYOAC forum.
Why would you want to do this rather than just play Sega Rally Revo on PC you may ask? Revo had weird handling. It's hard to explain exactly what was wrong with it but it just didn't feel right to me, like the cars would just slip and slide too much, with a weirdly unfixed camera. Now, the old-school Sega Rally games played a bit like this too, but in those games it worked. SR3 has what feels, to me, like superior handling to Revo and the camera seems to now be 'fixed' behind the car in a much more consistent sort of way. It's different to the way the camera behaved in the old school Sega Rallys where that style of 'looser' camera worked, but IMHO the fixed bumper style here works much better for SR3 (I hope that makes sense).
Revo also had a very inconsistent frame-rate. My PC's getting on bit now, but back then it should've been more than capable of running a game like Revo at 60fps, with the graphics settings up high, but it could only seem to manage around 40fps. SR3 has a (mostly) rock steady 60 fps frame-rate. Being able to swap Revo tracks into the game is pretty mind blowing. It essentially creates a brand new game… and there are quite a lot of tracks in Revo, meaning you can make yourself lots of different versions of the game, all with different tracks. It's also awesome to see graphical settings that hadn't featured in SR3 before, such as the Arctic tracks and the Safari ones (although I think the Desert '95 track in SR3 may be based on the Safari GFX).
It may well be possible to swap the car models out as well, I tried to swap out the Enduro Racer in SR3 for the Stratos in SR Revo, but the game kept crashing when I tried getting in-game after selecting it. The game files didn't match up the same way as they do with tracks though...
FYI, here's a quicker way of bulk renaming files with the "rename_underscores.vbs" method https://superuser.com/questions/197380/how-do-i-find-and-replace-a-character-in-filenames-in-windows-7-using-explorer
