Mamorou Akasaka is pretty green for a cop, too naïve and by-the-book for some of his senior colleagues. But with a loving wife and a child on the way, his home life is far better than he could've imagined--at least, until a surprise kidnapping of a Minister's grandson changes all of his plans.
Now forcefully deployed to the podunk town of Hinamizawa, with no one but a corrupt local cop to rely on, Akasaka's future truly seems uncertain. Will he be able to conclude his investigation of this small-time environmentalist group and return to Tokyo in time for his child's birth? Or will he be subject to the whims of fate, one more victim of a vast, unknowable future?
