In This Video We Are Discussing About Canonical, the firm behind the popular Ubuntu Linux distribution, has released the third point release of Ubuntu 20.04. This includes all the latest security updates so you don’t have to install them when performing a clean install and it includes the latest hardware enablement stacks to ensure the long-term support release continues to operate on newer hardware that came out since Ubuntu 20.04 launched last year.

In the release announcement, Canonical said:

“As usual, this point release includes many updates, and updated installation media has been provided so that fewer updates will need to be downloaded after installation. These include security updates and corrections for other high-impact bugs, with a focus on maintaining stability and compatibility with Ubuntu 20.04 LTS.”

Other Ubuntu-based distributions have also received the third point release; these distributions include Kubuntu, Ubuntu Budgie, Ubuntu MATE, Lubuntu, Ubuntu Kylin, Ubuntu Studio, and Xubuntu. These distributions all come pre-packaged with different desktop environments which is helpful if you’re not keen on the GNOME desktop that ships in the standard version of Ubuntu.

For those installing Ubuntu 20.04.3 on a server, the default settings will install the GA kernel, however, you can select the hardware enablement kernel from the installer bootloader if you are trying to install Ubuntu on newer hardware that the default kernel doesn’t support.

The Ubuntu team has announced a new update to the distribution's install media and community editions. The new version is 20.04.3 and it includes bug fixes that have become available since 20.04 was launched along with support for additional hardware. The release announcement reads: "Like previous LTS series, 20.04.3 includes hardware enablement stacks for use on newer hardware. This support is offered on all architectures. Ubuntu Server defaults to installing the GA kernel; however you may select the HWE kernel from the installer bootloader. As usual, this point release includes many updates, and updated installation media has been provided so that fewer updates will need to be downloaded after installation. These include security updates and corrections for other high-impact bugs, with a focus on maintaining stability and compatibility with Ubuntu 20.04 LTS.

Quick Update on Ubuntu 20.04.3
Ubuntu 20.04.3 brings the latest hardware support via Linux Kernel 5.11. This kernel is provided via Hardware Enablement (HWE) Stack feature of Ubuntu (package – linux-generic-hwe-20.04).

Hence, all the Official or Unofficial flavors of Ubuntu should get this update via Linux distribution specific channels.

The official installer includes most of the up-to-date packages, hence you do not need to reinstall a bunch of packages after a fresh installation of Ubuntu 20.04.3.

The server installer still would select the General Availability Kernel. So if you want to use the latest HWE stack, select it while installing the server flavor.

And additional bug fixes and updates lands in this release.

Closing Notes
A timely update from the Ubuntu team with a third point release for Ubuntu 20.04 polishing it to be more stable. Point releases are great because they are quiet while making your system more hardened.

The fourth point release Ubuntu 20.04.4 is expected on February 2022.
