'UNBELIEVABLE SIGHT' AS GIANT FIG TREE FLATTENS CAR WITH DRIVER INSIDE IN SYDNEY
'Unbelievable sight' as giant fig tree flattens car with driver inside in Sydney
A giant fig tree tore free of its foundations and flattened a sports car with a driver inside it in inner Sydney this morning. The driver. Jason Chong. told 9News he was driving to his work in Maroubra on what he thought was a 'nice day'. 'This whole tree came crashing down. it stunned me for a second.' Mr Chong said. adding the tree missed him by half a metre. 'I got out through the passenger side. people had to drag me out ... everyone was very nice. He said he's fine apart from a couple of cuts to his knuckle and head. Shocked bystanders filmed the aftermath as a shaken but uninjured Mr Chong grabbed items from the boot of the vehicle. Video. uploaded to Facebook by Yianni Zinonos. shows the extent of damage done to the windscreen. 'This is an unbelievable sight. a whole tree fell on top of this car on the corner of Redfern Street and Chalmers Street.' A spokesperson for the NSW State Emergency Service said it hadn't received a request to attend the incident but added wet ground and strong winds were typically the cause of large trees falling. Damage from insects or disease could also cause branches to fall. the spokesperson said. A City of Sydney spokesperson said nearby trees would be monitored for their condition. 'A fig tree in Redfern Park fell on to a car on Redfern Street at approximately 9am this morning.' a statement read. 'The City of Sydney's tree maintenance provider was on site within 20 minutes to assist emergency services with the clean up and removal of the tree. 'The tree was safely removed and the road re opened within an hour of the incident occurring. 'The City's tree maintenance provider organised a qualified arborist to undertake a visual inspection of the park trees along Redfern Street. 'No further issues were identified – the trees will continue to be monitored.'
