Since we first played a Gamerz Tek system, the 8-bit HD, we've been impressed with their quality, features and overall performance. Since then they've released their 16-bit HD SNES and Super Famicom clone and now they have entered the portables market with one of the most unique handhelds out there in the 8-Bit Boy.
The 8-Bit Boy is designed to play your NES Cartridges on the go, that's only part of the picture but we'll get to more of that in a minute. The system features a 7-inch display sandwiched between grips on each side which house the D-pad, start, select, A/B/AA/BB, brightness and reset buttons. The entire system is slightly wider and about 2x as thick as a Nintendo Switch. That's not too shocking as an NES cartridge is a lot thicker than one for the Switch.
The 8-Bit boy includes a lot of accessories right in the box. A micro-USB cable and 5v/2A power supply, desktop stand, 2 screen protectors and travel pouch are all included, but that's not all. See, in addition to being able to work as a portable you can also connect the 8-Bit Boy to your HD TV with the included HDMI cable. Gamerz Tek also developed a super-cool adapter that allows you to connect a pair of NES controllers to the system and play as-if this were a traditional NES. Gamerz Tek also includes a pair of their really stout NES controllers for use when connected to a TV.
One of the nicest features is a 16:9/4:3 switch. This allows you to choose between maintaining the original aspect ratio of your NES games or using all the screen in the system. Some people may see playing at 16:9 as blasphemy but there are those who want to want to utilize all the real estate they have available to them. It doesn't look right to me but that doesn't mean it's not right for someone else.
Overall the fit and finish of the 8-Bit Boy seems really nice. The molded composites don't feel cheap and plasticy, the feel pretty nice. The display offers 4 levels of brightness and the front-firing speakers are both clear and loud. If you're looking to keep your gaming to yourself a standard earphone jack allows you to plug in your favorite set of headphones or ear buds. Much like the speakers the earphone jack provides an exceptional balance between volume and clarity.
In my initial tests I am really digging the 8-Bit Boy from Gamerz Tek. It has played everything I have thrown at it, from NES carts to repros and multicarts. The included controllers are great and this far it has been a great experience. I cannot wait to get more testing in, including hooking it up to my television and throwing some Contra, Darkwing Duck or Super Mario Brothers up on my Television.
