I've been a fan of Gamerz Tek consoles since I first got my hands on the 8-Bit HD in the fall of 2017. For the money, it provided a very good experience and quickly became my favorite NES-only clone console. In 2017 Gamerz Tek announced that they were developing a portable NES clone system. From the moment I heard about it I wanted one and, thankfully, I now have one to test and review. I do need to thank Gamerz Tek for sending in this sample for review.

The 8-Bit Boy is extremely well-equipped out of the box, including 2-controllers, HDMI cable, AC Adapter and Micro USB cable are all included. I highly recommend installing a screen protector as the display is an absolute fingerprint magnet.

One of my first tests with an NES clone I perform is playing Super Mario Bros in-order to see how the audio, specifically the coins, sound. The coins were pitched high, exactly like the 8-Bit HD. While a bummer it wasn't unexpected, I had assumed that the 8-Bit HD would have been the base-system the 8-Bit Boy was based upon and, performance-wise, that definitely seems to be the case.

Battletoads is a game that many clone systems have issues with, specifically with level 2 and unfortunately, the 8-Bit Boy has this issue. It froze up during level 2 repeatedly which is a bummer. Gamerz Tek claims a 97% game compatibility rating and it looks like Battletoads falls in that 3%

Other games played well on the system, I didn't run into any other compatibility issues at all. I was able to play PAL NES, Famicom, multicarts and reproduction carts all without issue. The only other issue I ran into was when I tried to use a Game Genie which did not work at all.

Battery life has been nothing short of exceptional. I've played hours upon hours with the brightness maxed out and the battery life has been really impressive. As a portable, the 8-Bit Boy is pretty amazing!

Why it RoX:
- Plays a majority of NES and Famicom games, including PAL games
- Includes a great selection of accessories
- Onboard speakers sound great
- Turbo Buttons
- HDMI-output allows you to connect to a TV
- Amazing battery life

What could be improved?
- Could be smaller if it was set up for 4:3-only, which would reduce size and weight
- Not 100% games compatibility
- No options for SD Card or running ROMS

Should you buy one?
Are you a fan of the NES? Do you need an HDMI-equipped clone system? Do you want to play your carts on-the-go? Then yes, pick one of these up, it is absolutely awesome. I have thoroughly enjoyed playing the 8-Bit Boy, and I think you will too.
