I am a huge fan of budget-friendly HDMI-equipped retro video game systems. The NES and Super NES, man, those were my childhood and teen years. I spent years traveling across Hyrule, riding Yoshi around Dinosaur island, searching for Dracula or racing around in go-karts and they were some of the best parts of my youth. While I do have an NES, Super NES and Super Famicom making them look good on my HD TV can be a struggle. RF and 240P Composite video just doesn't look good. That's where Gamerz Tek and the Super HD-2 comes into play. It makes it possible for me to enjoy both my 8-bit and 16-bit collections while upscaling the video to 720P.

The Super HD-2 takes inspiration from the design of Gamerz Tek's 16-bit HD, but it adds more than a few things to the mix to make it its own system. The front of the system features a pair of Super NES controller ports and two NES controller ports are on the side. The back of the console features both composite and HDMI outputs, making it possible to connect the system to either flat panel or CRT televisions. The back also features a 16:9/4:3 switch, a welcome addition. The power input is a nice Micro-USB port, making it quick and easy to connect to either the included 1A wall-wart or my CharJenPro Super Charger multi-output USB power supply. The underside of the system has an NTSC/PAL switch, making it possible to play European imported games in addition to NTSC and NTSC-J carts too.

The Super HD-2 provides everything you need to get connected. A nice HDMI cable is included, as are composite video cables for connecting to either a modern flat panel or CRT television. Also included are two of Gamerz Tek's own excellent SNES-inspired controllers. I am a little bummed out that there aren't any NES-controllers included but either they would have had to remove an SNES controller for it, reducing multiplayer functionality and accessibility, or include 4 total controllers and increase the cost.

My initial impressions with the system are very good. I've had issues with the 16-bit HD not recognizing my PAL version of Yoshi's Island for the SNES but the Suer HD-2 plays it without issue. We've already live streamed with the system too and the performance was very good. I look forward to further testing with both NTSC and PAL NES games, Famicom games with a 60-to-72 pin adapter, NTSC and PAL Super Nintendo and Super Famicom games. Yeah, we're going to test the daylights out of this thing! And if initial results are any indication I am prepared to be impressed!
