The black sheep of the Need For Speed franchise. Does it completely suck or is it maybe worth checking out? Is it a 4 / 10 like IGN says.? Or... is it UNDER RATED?
Put away your police badge and uniform and prepare to go deep undercover as a street racer. Wait. Wait a minute!? Isn't this the exact same plot as The Fast and The Furious? Take orders that could be easily be mistaken as sexual innuendos from sexy FBI agent, Chase Linh, as you work together to bring down a car smuggling operation. Live your life a quarter mile at a time as you do your best Paul Walker impression to infiltrate a gang that's up to no good. And last but not least, team up with fellow gang member, Carmen Mendez, who's also very sexy by the way - to stop the Triad crime syndicate once and for all!
Not many people gave this game a chance since why would you play this when the flashier and more graphically impressive next gen versions exist? Critics didn't bother with it either as I could only find two that's right two reviews of this game that are in English. It's a shame as this game is balls to the wall fun and to me deserves a spot in your PS2 library! If you love a good cop chase, this game is filled with them and it gets to the point of literal insanity at times. There is one mission in particular where you steal a car with near unlimited NOS that is hands down worth playing this game for!
Next gen version of Undercover got you down? Tired of the city feeling lifeless with little to no car traffic on the road? Want a GPS navigation system for your car like the good old days? Do you miss being able to enter races while driving around in free roam mode? Well it's time to dig your old PS2 out of the closet my friends and buckle up because all of that and more is in this completely different version of the game made by Exient Entertainment instead of EA Black Box! Some of the other major differences include Local Multiplayer, Challenge Series Mode, All Upgrades Unlocked from the Beginning, Police Car Missions, EA Trax Custom Soundtrack, and more!
Remember when it was okay for women to be sexy? Return to a simpler time my friends because male gaze is in full effect here! Feast your eyes upon the oh so sexy long legs Maggie Q best known for her work in Mission Impossible 3! Maggie Q not enough for you? Check out camera angles that leave very little to the imagination of Christina Milian of umm Bring It On: Fight to the Finish fame?! She's in it too! Who needs plot when you can enjoy dirty dialogue where every other word is probably a reference to getting it on! Now if that's not enough for you, here's the cherry on top - the greatest loading screens in video game history!
The game's draw distance is utterly horrendous with traffic cars seemingly blinking into existence from out of nowhere giving you very little time to react. Hitting cars honestly isn't too big of a deal since this game goes for a more arcade style of racing than previous NFS titles. Cars will bounce off of you with little consequences unless you ram into the back of an 18 wheeler which will take you from 100 to 0 mph real quick.
Cops respawn at a truly insane rate and just when you think you've finally shaken them off your trail, more of them will swarm you out of nowhere. To make matters worst - stopping them with pursuit breakers is pretty hit or miss and cooldown spots don't show up as frequently as in the next gen versions of the game. Rubberbanding is also broken as the police can catch back up to you in a blink of an eye. Yes the cops can be unfair in this game but all is not lost if you are okay with exploiting the games weak enemy AI. My solution - simply park your car at any safehouse and lose the cops the easy way!
It's hard to follow in the footsteps of some of the best racing games of all time and EA wanting to make Need For Speed a yearly franchise like Madden was a recipe for disaster. The developers had less than 18 months to finish this game from start to finish and it shows in many areas. Is having more NFS Most Wanted and Carbon a bad thing? Hell no in my opinion! A wise man once said, "If you're going to steal, steal from the best!"
