Another example of a movie tie in video game gone wrong or perhaps the greatest educational title on the PS2? Does it completely suck or is it maybe worth checking out? Is it a 4 / 10 like IGN says.? Or... is it UNDER RATED?
Prepare to uncover one of the greatest secrets of all time in this third person adventure game based on blockbuster film starring Tom Hanks. Okay I mean based on the controversial novel by Dan Brown. Put on your Sherlock Holmes thinking cap as American symbologist expert, Robert Langdon, who just so happens to be framed for murder. Become a fugitive on the run with Sophie Neveu, a French police Cryptographer, searching for clues to track down her grandfather's killer. Solving the mystery won't be easy as a pale skinned monk assassin with strange love for whips and spike chains is on your trail!
There aren't a lot of educational titles on the PlayStation 2 besides maybe a handful of trivia games like "Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader?" To have any chance at solving the many brain twisting puzzles in the game, you'll need to dig through a literal encyclopedia's worth of information. If you find history, conspiracy theories, and religious themes to be interesting like me, this game is worth checking out. Some of the things you will learn along the way are: The possible origin of why Friday the 13th is so unlucky, the fourteen stations of crucifixion, The Roman God Venus and her many lovers, Canterbury Tales, Shakespeare, the Legend of King Arthur and his Knights, The Mona Lisa, and last but not least the Fibonacci sequence.
It's no secret that the movie had some major flaws such a bloated run time of almost three hours, zero chemistry between the leads, and almost all of the performances felt phoned in with the exception of scene stealing actor Ian McKellan. Some examples of where the game outshines the movie are: Learning the hidden secrets of the Last Supper Painting through a series of puzzles instead of a boring PowerPoint slide, The removal of Sophie's miracles as to not spoil the ending, and you even get to visit some new locations such as Sauniere's Mansion and the Saint Sulpice Church. To top it all off - Everyone's favorite Albino assassin Monk, Silas, has gotten some upgrades as well as he's now a hulking brute in line with Resident Evil's Mr. X or Nemesis.
Sound I feel is one of the most overlooked categories when it comes to video games. While the game doesn't feature any of the music from the movie, it does however feature an original soundtrack featuring Award-Winning Composer Winifred Philips. Never heard of her before? Well she only did the music on you know GOD OF FREAKING WAR?
What better way to spend your downtime between solving puzzles than some good old fashion fist fights! Combat boils down a simple mini game where you press the right combination of buttons before time runs out. You can pick up various weapons along the way but they don't really seem to pack much more punch than your fists. Fighting however is mostly avoidable if you use stealth takedowns, wall ambushes, or even the occasional trap. You could maybe change the difficulty of the combat to easy in the options menu or bypass it entirely with a cheat code that turns you into one punch man!
Well critics didn't like duking it out but surely the stealth sections have to bet better right? WRONG AGAIN! The stealth is honestly not too shabby as you can do some sweet takedowns that end up killing enemies in one shot. It sure beats the hell out of fist fighting! You can also lure enemies into a shoulder tackle by tapping on walls or throwing the occasional office stapler at them.
Critics really wanted that authentic Tom Hanks likeness in this game. The critics claim the characters in the game sound and look nothing like their movie counterparts. I guess they never watched the movie because the voice actors actually do a really impressive job here. The voice cast is comprised of many industry veterans including Jennifer Hale of Mass Effect fame and even Mad TV's Phil LaMarr! Robert Clotworthy who's best known for playing Jim Raynor in StarCraft does a really good Tom Hanks impersonation.
