0September 14th, 1942: The directive stating the aims for the German summer offensive of 1942 did mention Stalingrad, but did not require the city's capture. However, as events unfolded Stalingrad would slowly but surely become the focal point of the Eastern Front. The first German assualts into the city itself began in mid-September. Little did the troops of the 6th Army know that the city on the Volga was to be the final resting place of their entire army.

After staving off the Soviet winter counteroffensive of 1941/42, the German Wehrmacht reclaims the initiative the following summer. Concentrating their forces in the south, the Germans once again slice through Soviet lines, aiming for the oilfields of the Caucasus and the industrial city of Stalingrad. But the Red Army has learned much from past failures and prepares to strike back in an overwhelming fashion.
