December 12th, 1942: Grandiose in name only, Operation "Winter Storm" seems unlikely to succeed in its goal of reaching the 250,000 Axis troops surrounded near Stalingrad. The assembled relief force is underwhelming, and unbeknownst to the Germans, further Red Army offensives are imminent. The first of these, "Little Saturn", will soon crash into ad hoc Army Group Don, a hodgepodge of mostly second-rate Axis units. Should the Red Army achieve a breakthrough against these forces, Winter Storm will fail and 6th Army's fate will be sealed.

After staving off the Soviet winter counteroffensive of 1941/42, the German Wehrmacht reclaims the initiative the following summer. Concentrating their forces in the south, the Germans once again slice through Soviet lines, aiming for the oilfields of the Caucasus and the industrial city of Stalingrad. But the Red Army has learned much from past failures and prepares to strike back in an overwhelming fashion.
