20 long years after the initial rise of online first-person shooters, I still can't say that I truly "get" even the basic appeal of multiplayer gaming. Not having a single competitive bone in my body must have something to do with it, and growing up without a lot of gaming-oriented friends to play with either locally or online is another part of the explanation. Still, I can admire good multiplayer design when I see it, and the constantly evolving new Unreal Tournament is slowly turning into something pretty darn awesome. The new Outpost23 map is easily the best practical use of the Unreal Engine 4 so far, and the action already feels tight and chaotic like you'd expect from a next-gen installment in the long-dormant UT franchise. And thanks to the crazy economics of gaming in 2015, it's free for everyone to try out:
