The quality of Dying Light's visuals from a purely technical perspective has been duly recognized, but I feel that the actual design of the game's environments has not been praised nearly enough. Unlike many city-based open worlds, the slums of Harran feel like real places. Not only are the structures varied, detailed and filled with both interactable and non-interactable objects; the sprawling urban networks of streets, residential areas, shops and various other facilities also display an internal logic rather than coming off as loosely connected assets haphazardly spread around in 3D space.

Combat-wise, the inclusion of gunplay (which plays a much bigger role in Dying Light than it did in Dead Island) makes for a satisfying change of pace from the gruesome melee mayhem, but often the enemy (non-zombie) AI doesn't seem to handle the switch to long-range attacks very well...
