Pillars of Eternity (2015) (PC) (Obsidian Entertainment)
Pillars of Eternity is out this week, and - at least judging by the reviews so far - Obsidian Entertainment can finally claim to have lived up to the potential inherent in a studio started by veteran game designers from Black Isle Studios. At long last, we have a deep and engaging +60 hour isometric 2D RPG worthy of being called a spiritual successor to modern Infinity Engine-based classics such as Icewind Dale, Baldur's Gate and Planescape: Torment. Much praise has already been lavished on PoE's combat, writing, player freedom and character interactions and this resounding Kickstarter success even makes last year's excellent Divinity: Original Sin seem a bit small and limited by comparison. I haven't played much of my "Royal Edition" copy yet, but the $500 I donated way back in 2012 certainly appears to have been put to good use...
