UnWheel (2006) - Every PC Rally Game
UnWheel by The UnWheel Team, 2006.
Initially released as a mod for Unreal Tournament 2003, then ported to the sequel, Unreal Tournament 2004, the version I'm showing here is 2006's UnWheel R5, with additional community produced tracks.
This mod was originally released for a number of competitions/contests, and proved popular. Converting Unreal Tournament 2004 into a wide ranging racing game, covering not only rally and racing circuits, but also things like capture the flag, stunt racing and many more disciplines, this is well worth a go!
Rally content-wise, there are not that many circuits specifically for rally, but racing circuits can be used the same way :-). Car-wise, there are just 2 cars, which seem based on the shape of a Subaru Impreza, but with different skins. I've also thrown in a car based on a Nissan Skyline R34 and a VW Beetle, just for some variety!
Handling is a bit hit-and-miss; it's easy to get a nice drift going, using the handbrake, but it often leads to the car going a bit out-of-control, meaning it's sometimes better to drive carefully rather than flat-out!
There are a few glitches here and there, and the environmental sound effects can often overpower the car engine noise, but overall it's a very impressive package! Note: I'm running it here at 1920x1200, the highest resolution inside Unreal Tournament 2004, without resorting to command line strings. If I pushed it up to 2560x1440 the cars start to slip off the bottom of the screen due to how the screen content is scaled, and I didn't want to fiddle about with Field-Of-View.
