I was not able to fix the broken drive, so I tried to replace it.
Since 3.5'' DD drives are quite rare today, I tried a more common HD drive from a regular PC. It works!
I had to change a Jumper on the Drive, that changes the 'Drive Select' signal from 1 to 0. Luckily I found a drive that had those jumpers. Many newer PC drives don't have them and you have to unsolder and replace some SMD resistors on the circuit board... if you are lucky.
The Drive I used was a TEAC FD-235HF, but there are several variants of it available and not all of them have the jumpers on them.
