Valis II Nintendo Switch playthrough
Here we commence Valis II, and being essentially a mid stepping point for the series from the MSX, Famicom and other versions of the first game, this one doesn't quite have the same polish as later versions of 1 and 3. Yuko lacking her slide for starters. In addition this was one of the few games that got an English dub, and also was where it started the trend of Yuko changing from her Valis armor to something else midway through the game.
This is technically easier than 1 and 3, but yet also a smidge harder? Mostly since you REALLY have to be on your toes otherwise you'll run into enemies a lot. And this game had a slight Mega Man X/Metrovania motif where you can find health extensions in the levels. This is very useful to do especially for late game to make sure you have the most health you can get. Also, for specific attacks Yuko can do, her default is ok once you level it up a bit, the two way shot is decent, but the one you want to keep is the slash wave, especially once you get it to level 3 due to how much area it covers.
It slices through enemies, and can destroy most enemy projectiles! This can really save your neck, and you want to keep this ability once you get the level 3 version, as whatever you do, don't ever pick up the homing attack! It's weak, and isn't as accurate as one would like.
Anyway, here is where I found for the most part, the dub used a mostly 90% accurate script, but oddly changed the dialogue in certain places, Megas' lines in particular. Also oh wow was the delivery horrible in the dub in spots! People make fun of the OG Resident Evil, but the English dub of this was horrendous by comparison! There was a charm to it in RE, but here, it was basically "AAGGGHHH WHY DID YOU TALK LIKE THAT AND USE THAT TAKE!?" most of the time.
Here, besides better delivery and better sounding voices, the written dialogue is also thankfully not nearly the level of cringe as written portions in spots. Which also totally changes the dynamic and feel of certain scenes. Case and point the "fair fight" and such. This game slightly favors brute force a bit more than the remake of 1, but still you do need to play smart. Also you can adjust the controls for each game to add a auto fire button. Which really helped me out in this game due you how much you have to attack in some cases.
Also, quick note. Unlike where I had in fact played Valis 1 and 3 via emulation, I never touched this game, and this is only the second time I beat this one. XD How's that for crazy? But as for a more personal comment, while for the most part I am fine with the story of Valis in general, admittedly to be quite frank? The fact that Yuko and Valna being twins is one of the weakest aspects of the series. It barely affects the story much and doesn't quite have much bearing on overall narrative. Expect I suppose having a connection to Yuko and thereby being a connection in later titles but it essentially doesn't go much of anywhere. It's not terrible but I will admit it's a weak point of the plot compared to Rogles and Megas being brothers.
