VALUE was joined by participants at Leiden University's Faculty of Archaeology to collaboratively reconstruct the recently destroyed Temple of Bel in Syria's World Heritage Site of Palmyra. VALUE had prepared the foundations of the temple complex (i.e. a sandy platform) beforehand. During a two-hour event, the participants and VALUE members worked together, four at a time, to reconstruct the Temple of Bel. The reconstruction was based on photographs from 2014 as well as drawings and plans from the late 18th century. The resulting temple can be seen in this video.
During the event, we engaged in a discussion with staff from the Near East & Archaeological Heritage Management programs. What is the significance of Palmyra as an archaeological site? How can archaeological heritage in conflict zones be protected? What is the value of virtual reconstructions? Who has the right to destroy the past?
More information about the event, the preparations and the results can be found on our website: valueproject.nl
