
Very Good Engine Updates 3/31/19 (Read Description!)
A lot of what's going on here isn't very obvious without an explanation so I'll just write about it down here.
First things first, I have brand new custom collisions now. I can actually have multiple hitboxes per object, and I can set each hitbox to a predetermined shape (square, line, circle, trapezoid). This was an absolute PAIN to do and took me several months but the end result is absolutely worth it. I can also use special hitbox objects for more specialized collisions (ex. like a Falcon Punch hitbox).
Second thing, you'll notice a white line, and the inconsistent framerate in the upper corner. I have actually pulled off a notoriously hard thing to do in Game Maker: delta time. I can now make object speeds consistent regardless of framerate. This has multiple applications. One is that if the game lags for some reason, everything will continue to move at the same speed and not slow down. Another is that by adding a multiplier to the delta, I can actually make objects move in slow or fast motion, meaning I can do crazy bullet time effects. There were a few things I really wanted to do in SQGT involving slowing down time and now I can do all of them.
Finally, I have custom controls! ...which are not fully implemented because they’re horrible to make. I wouldn’t wish this on anybody. The end goal is to make them compatible with keyboard and gamepads and also let you map the keys (this is the hard part).
Hopefully next month I’ll have some cooler looking footage; I do have a job now so it’ll be a bit harder to work on this stuff but most of the hard stuff is finally done!
