"Victory Road" (Pokemon Gold & Silver) LIVE Jazz Cover // J-MUSIC Pocket Band
Our live cover of "Victory Road" from Pokemon Gold & Silver, originally composed by Junichi Masuda. This arrangement by Patrick Bartley.
The road to victory is a road often sought after and traveled, but only few manage to complete it. With this arrangement, we hoped to capture that feeling of digging into the deepest part of the self to conquer the greatest obstacles - with some cool twists here and there, of course. When I (Pat) first heard this song last year (having not gotten to the end of the 2nd gen games prior), I was taken aback by how hip the melody and counter-line were. It struck me how much of a vibe was able to be created with just a snare drum, melody, and ostinato counter-line. With that, I knew we had to play this right away. To bring this to life, I took some inspiration from our good friend, Ben Sutin, who has been known in the past few years for his genius fusions of klezmer music and jazz, with some other various Balkan twists, and let the band (who plays with him) go off into the next zone with this one. Here, the horns take a back seat to let the rhythm section ride, and some of the most amazing and stretching solos we've witnessed can be heard from Ben on violin, Ben Rosenblum on accordion, Jake on vibes, and Ben Zweig on drums (that's 3 Ben's!). We hope this inspires you to push on to your own victories, no matter what road you have to travel!
