Video Game Bigotry: How Jrpgs Handle Racism
I find myself very fascinated by video game bigotry. It's a very sensitive topic being portrayed for an audience in the interactive medium of video games. Now imagine that the people doing the portrayal live in a place where most people look the same and racism isn't an everyday occurrence. That's essentially what I want to take a look at with Jrpgs. Japanese games tackle a wide range of concepts and ideas without restraint and that includes racism, so I wanted to see how well they handle it.
The games I chose to examine are fire emblem 3 houses, Xenoblade 1 & 2, and tales of arise. All of these games honestly could have their own deconstruction videos but I feel like it's a good way of "scanning the field" so to speak if I touch on each of these.
The golden deer house of fire emblem 3 houses touches on these ideas in a way that other games in the series don't. While not being the central focus of the games xenoblade chronicles 1 and 2 of a lot of racial conflict in their respective settings. Last but certainly not least, Tales of Arise is a game built from the ground up to deconstruct and analyze system oppression.
I hope you really enjoy this video because it took a lot of time to put together!
