The player plays for Steve R. Hawkins' main hero, born October 13, 1939 in Wilmington, North Carolina, who performs various reconnaissance and combat missions. In the game he then leads a team with a different code name from mission to mission. The movement around the Vietnamese jungle is somewhat limited by the "walls" on the edge of the map. Even if a player has maps available, he may ask the guide to guide him. He can warn of impending danger, such as traps and patrolling enemy soldiers. Gameplay is also somewhat different than other FPS games of that time. This is because in the other war games you are fighting an official enemy. In the Vietcong, you fight guerrilla fighting the Vietcong and all its tricks, such as traps or tunnels.
Unlike other games, the player has a choice of weapons before the mission, at the shooting range. He can choose both American and captured weapons. At the shooting range, they can test their accuracy and effectiveness on three targets and several bottles. The location of the bunker and shooting range varies considerably throughout the game. But not radically, only "someone" moves furniture. The missions themselves are quite different from each other. One is the liberation of a captured hostage, the second of a large underground city. Locations are quite different from each other, but each type of location has a relatively short length in play. Once there is a canyon with a creek, the second a dense jungle, the third a huge hill, the ruins of the temple and the underground cities. These are probably the most atmospheric locations. Infinite wandering and slow movement sometimes make the players feel strange feelings of discouragement.

The Vietcong first-person expansion pack will take your US Special Forces back to Vietnam in 1967 in a total of seven single-player missions and eight multiplayer maps. Another benefit of the expansion pack is the addition of six new weapons (including a machete or bayonet), and several new aircraft appear in the game (B52, F-105 Thunderchief and F4 Phantom). The game is completely in Czech.
