1We have some very exciting news for you! Our newest update is right around the corner with Season 9: Stalkers and there are a couple of important additions with this update. Some of the things that our community was craving were next gen console upgrades and a new throwable consumable in the form of grenades. Well guess what? They're both coming with Season 9!
First, let's dive into the first performance enhancements for PlayStation 5. This upgrade was vital for our team going into Season 9 and our main goal was to run Vigor at 60 fps (Woohooo)! Our lead programmer, Johanny Clerc-Renaud, said that implementing the console enhancements went smoothly thanks to Sony providing us, the developers, with an easy way to detect that the game is running on PS5. Once Vigor detected that it's runnning on PS5, it was fairly easy to unlock the frame rate to 60 fps. Now that our goal is reached, and thanks to the more powerful hardware, we can stream all assets faster, reduce loading times and make browsing in the Shelter menu smoother than ever.
Bringing 60 fps to Vigor is just the beginning. The possibilities that PS5 brings, allow us to create even better gaming experiences for our players. What we plan on doing next, is to use the additional power we get from the console to boost image quality. Johanny mentioned, that our team would like to increase the target resolution, boost the quality of the shadows and sharpen the overall image. But we still have to investigate it.
A funny, behind the scenes bug that occurred during the development of Season 9 had to do with the insanely fast loading time on PS5. You see, it had less than 2 seconds of loading time and that caused the player to skip the lobby and enter the Shootout mode first, giving them an unfair advantage against the rest of the players... while they were still loading. Our team has since fixed this issue but it makes for an interesting story.
Onto the next big thing. Grenades! Yes finally, we're bringing grenades into Vigor. It's been a long time coming but we decided that now is the best time to introduce them into the mix. Grenades are a nice addition to shake things up for players and change the game-play experience a bit, as well as alter how you behave in Encounters. They're a great tool to force other players who might be hiding out inside a house or an advantageous point. They can help in situations when you feel like you might be walking into an ambush and so you can throw a grenade preemptively and if there's someone waiting for you, it will get them moving. Basically, you can go into the Encounters with an advantage and be better prepared for these kinds of situations. Ultimately, they will bring some versatility and will allow players to pursue a faster-paced game style.
The whole development process for grenades was a roller coaster because we had them in the early stages of the game's development but they weren't great. So we decided to remove them from the game, work on them on the side and re-introduce them once they were ready. Some of the difficulties during the whole process were changes in the team that slowed down the development. The grenades passed through a lot of hands, before an incredible duo in our team rose to the challenge, put their minds together and ultimately did a fantastic job bringing the grenades to life! One of the struggles with the grenades was the fact that we don't have any animators on the Vigor team, so we had to work with the existing animations that we had. One person from our duo team, who is really skilled at animating stuff, was able to take our existing animations and make them look more natural and smooth.
