It's been a while since I revisited some Megadrive titles so here we go!
This is an old-school bootleg from back in the Day. Bootlegs usually either ported a game from another system - either a popular title that wasn't released or a downport from superior hardware. These could also be bootleg unofficial sequels to popular titles looking to catch the unaware out. Often the label can be misleading too - for example Nina is on the label but not in this game.
This is Virtua Fighter 2 vs Tekken 2 - or as the title says - V.R. Fighter vs Taken 2. I picked this up from a market in the early 2000's. It is the ultimate 16-bit Dream Match in many ways. Featuring 12 characters from 3 different franchises it features:
Akira, Shun Di, Lion, Pai, & Wolf from the Virtua Fighter series
Heihachi, Jun, Lee, Paul & Kazuya from the Tekken series
& Honey & Bahn from the Fighting Vipers series.
While the game is clunky, a little slow & unresponsive & with very limited moves & somewhat erratic hit detection & frame rate it is clear the bootleggers made a real effort with this as it features:
all 12 characters with custom sprites - these are ripped from the Megadrive version of Virtua Fighter 2 but are new even where the character appears in both games such as Akira, Pai & Wolf. Shun Di & Lion weren't in that game at all anyway.
The Fighting Vipers sprites are new.
The Tekken characters may be from Tekken Special on the Megadrive but that also featured others like Nina & I seem to remember it having a different look, I have this cart too so I'll do a proper comparison at some point.
The backgrounds also have had a lot of effort with animation & parallax & even day to night transitions. The music is also a pretty good rendition of the originals & there is plenty of speech.
I play through as Shun Di here.
Enjoy!
I play it here on my CDX/MultiMega - the scanlines are added by a RetroTink as I normally play these games on a CRT but this is easier to capture.
Let me know what you think. Prefer videos with or without scanlines? Want to see footage recorded from a CRT screen (I have various screen from consumer sets to PVM's & a GDM)
As always - captured from genuine hardware in this case a MultiMega/CDX although the cartridge is obviously an old school bootleg!
If you enjoy this video or want more content like this let me know.
As always this is uploaded under the Fair Use Policy - no money is being made from this video.
