YEAH!

Okay...that's not a very good description, but Virtua Fighter was the start of a pretty important series in the history of gaming! The game was an early attempt at fighting games made in 3D (said to be widely recognized as the first), instead of the typical 2D method that was often used back in the day. 3D was a huge craze and different companies were learning about how to utilize 3D in gaming...you had games like Virtua Fighter, but you also had games like Star Fox (also iconic), Vortex, so on and so forth...

That said, the game was both "basic" and "complex"...looking at it with more modern technology in mind, it's hard to describe what made Virtua Fighter so captivating, but the added dimension allowed for different strategies that cannot be applied in 2D. Evolutions in 3D fighters (not this game so much, but in general)...To think that a "side step" was such a huge game changer, and now, some of the most technical 3D fighters cannot be WITHOUT a side step, or "risk versus reward" by performing more powerful attacks or throws depending on which SIDE of the opponent you hit/grab.

Having no projectiles or anything of the sort, Virtua Fighter (and other early 3D fighters) required you to get up close and personal, which is significant for a number of reasons. While getting close and personal isn't exactly something new to fighting games, doing it in 3D felt different, attacks had various hit boxes that could not be replicated in 2D and in VF's case, the lack of major combos put more of an emphasis on moving, bobbing and weaving, and strategy that effectively plays on that third dimension. As is, the game has aged poorly visually, naturally (2D has a HUGE advantage in this regard as games typically stay charming/detailed over the passage of time), but the game sounds good and the gameplay is fundamentally sound.
