I've kinda been exploring the voice in sound design for a little over 5 months now. Most prominently through processing but more recently according to what I perceive as adjacent concepts and practices. One such moment being the creature/monsters.

In this clip you'll hear my attempt at designing the nuances of a roar for the creature wraith from the game Evolve. Wraith, is what you'd call a plane shifting gotcha-bitch! sneaky predator so for that I largely tried to play on the shrieking breathy nature of the creature more than anything else.

My biggest takeaway is that creatures are surprisingly non-animal. In this clip alone I'd say 60% of these sounds are objects (rubber gloves, chair scrapes) as opposed to real animals that exist. I think the trick in this is finding material and recording techniques that mimic the tone, character, or pitch of the creature you're designing for and then creating foundation or support layers. The main screech for instance is me dragging a rubber glove on polystyrene.

I included two iterations in this so I could also just illustrate that the gaps in improvement might be small but they're largely worthwhile to reach where you want to be. The first clip is fine but also very static. You don't get a sense of the voice evolving over time through all its modulations or vocal inherent vocal structure that naturally occurs. In the 2nd clip, however, I do feel that is more apparent because of a revision of sample layers and more dynamically bringing attention to various layers present.
