Vox Machinae - VR Gameplay HTC Vive
Mech Warrior in VR. Pack it up, we're done here. Enough said...
Vox Machinae fills a major hole in the current offering of VR titles. We just don't have many great mech games and in my opinon mech games are a great fit for VR.
The pacing of combat can vary quite a bit depending on your skill level. You're piloting a skyscraper sized, walking hunk of metal and death. They don't move very fast. Getting to the battle can be a bit tedious but it definitely adds to the immersion of piloting such a giant war machine. Once you get into combat things heat up fairly quickly.
There's a lot of room for strategy, both before and during a match. What mech to take. How to kit it out. How you approach combat. How your team works together. There are many layers to Vox Machinae that I think would make it an excellent competitive title.
I loved the cockpit. There is no static HUD that you magically see. You're immersed into the role of a pilot. You can move pieces of your cockpit around and set it up the way you want. Everything you do with your mech is via you reaching out and interacting with controls in your cockpit. There is no "squeeze grips to jump". You have to actually reach out and interact with the booster stick. There is no trackpad locomotion. You have to physically interact with a throttle. Every piece of information you have at your fingertips is displayed as if you were actually in the cockpit. It just works and feels wonderful.
My ever present fear of population issues in PvP only games was somewhat put to rest here. Over a month and a half after launching the game still has enough of a population that I easily found a game on a random weekday night. A rare feat for a lot of VR PvP titles.
I do wish the game modes were a little more clear and defined. For the most part I had no idea what I was doing each match other than killing the other team. I was likely more of a burden than boon to my team. No one loves tutorials but it would be nice if there was something that showed you what each game mode was about. It would be easier to jump into a match and feel like I was contributing if I at least knew what the goal was. This could even be a brief description between matches of what's up next and what you're supposed to do. As I type this I realize that there was an objective panel in the cockpit that I largely ignored and this information could have been there. If so, for new players, something a bit more in your face might be a good idea.
Right now I believe Vox Machinae is a unique experience in VR and one that should set the standard for other VR titles. Definitely pick this up and give it a shot. Especially if you're a mech fan.
