VR Skater | Written Review

VR Skater is the first skateboarding VR title that really scratches that itch good, and does it without over complicating stuff and ruining the experience in the process. The current early access build is limited to only one level so far and only 1/3rd of the music library (you can stop the music listen to anything you want through a separate program too).

VR Skater uses a control scheme involving waving your arms in different ways to do the tricks. The motions your doing feel satisfying and aren't overly difficult to pull off. For grinds, and manuals your using a combination of face buttons (axby on oculus) to do these things and admittedly when it comes to the manuals or more complex grinds like nose grinds it honestly will take time to get used but is all the more satisfying when mastered. Your movement is done by holding the left hand trigger down and and pointing in a direction, if your not moving you can basically turn in the spot with this but during movement it just shifts your weight in that direction so you might struggle a little to get used to how it works but you will master it very quickly.

Visually the one level looks great in the headset with high quality textures. It also has a lot of great options for the second screen viewpoint if your playing the game with friends or creating content by allowing you to increase the fov. Audio wise the songs included sound great and like they were right out of a tony hawk game. And when it came to the sound effects, honestly everything was top notch and I have no complaints.

To conclude I think VR Skater in its current state even with only 1 stage is worth getting. Its been in development for years you can see the early stages on the developers YouTube page. I have played tons of skateboarding games in the past and I completely agree that this doesn't have a lot of content and doesn't have any vert tricks. But if you really look at what's available for VR boarding experiences for me this is way more fun and works way better then any of those. I think it won't take long to start seeing more of the stages released and even as one stage its going to take you a lot of time to master it and I never felt bored of it when I played. I consider VR Skater the current king of VR boarding games and most definitely recommend it for those into that kind of experience.
