VS. Mighty Bomb Jack, 1986 Tecmo
Japan-only entry in the VS. ouvre, this is a long and difficult but cutesy scrolling action game, with tons of hidden surprises and objectives. This is a sequel to BOMB JACK, created by Tehkan (now known as Tecmo) and though you are still Bomb Jack and you still collect bombs, the game is otherwise vastly different. The original was fixed-screen, so this version definitely expands the Bomb Jack world. The basic objective is to get through 16 or so levels and free the Royal Family. To do so, along the way you must collect some S symbols (hidden in blocks, you will need to jump on them repeatedly) and 2 crystal balls (hidden somewhere on levels 7 and 12). There will be tons of treasure chests to open by jumping on them twice, and they are red and yellow. Bomb Jack can change to other forms in this game by pressing the secondary button, but you must have collected coins (found in treasures or after temporarily changing enemies into coins via collection of a "P" coin). With each coin you can change Bomb Jack into one of 3 forms-- 1) Blue, which allows him to open the yellow chests, 2) Orange, which allows him to open any chest by running into the side of it, and 3) Green, which turns all enemies into coins for a short time. All forms are only temporary. Note that the jumping mechanics are similar from the original BOMB JACK-- hold down jump and up for a super-high vertical jump, and wail on the jump button to VERY SLOWLY descend. This is key to avoid enemies that can cluster around you very tightly, and to avoid landing on lava! So many hidden secrets in this colorful, lively game, but no hints on how to find them. Almost exactly the same as the NES port. I'll get back to some requests next.
